When you’re moving into a new house, the more that is done before you put the first dresser in the bedroom, the happier you and your family will be. Get off to a great start in your new home by making sure the little details are taken care of. Here are 10 tips for getting settled in your new home:

1. New passwords. Change codes and passwords for every security system and anything else from the previous owner. Make sure your new password is not easily guessable or similar to the old password. Record passwords and keep them in a safe place.

2. New keys. Change the locks on the house, garage, gates, etc. A local locksmith can re-key or replace the lock. Double check the window locks to ensure they are fully functional.

3. New smoke detector. Check existing units for expiring dates. Call your local fire department to learn more.

4. New Manuals. Save every manual for every appliance, detector and other devices. Save maintenance reminders when necessary.

5. New electric breaker panel. Figure out exactly where your electrical breaker panel is. Label each circuit and do a room-by-room check.

6. New water shut-off. Find where the main water shut-off is. Learn how to turn the water line off from the refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, faucets, etc.

7. New filters. Clean or replace filters in the furnace, range hood, air conditioner and any other appliances.

8. New clean home. Make sure to clean the carpets, gutters, downspouts, windows, doors, etc. It’s easiest to clean BEFORE you move in.

9. New schedules. Ask neighbors about local pests and make a note of the garbage pickup. It’s easier to keep pests out before they move in.

10. New paint. It is easier to freshen up your walls before you move all of your things into the home.
