A common worry among homeowners is pet adjustment periods and knowing their pets will acclimate to their new home. By using the following six tips, you can make sure that moving with your pet is as easy as possible.

  1. Plan ahead. If you’re moving to a new city or far enough away from your previous home, find a veterinarian before you arrive. Get a copy of your pet’s medical file from his or her previous doctor to provide. Be sure you to pack your pet’s toys last and label clearly to find them easily in your new home. If you use other pet services such as a dog walker or groomers, make arrangements to find new ones as well.
  2. Maintain consistent routines. With so much change coming for you and your pet, it’s important to keep as much of a regular schedule as possible in the new home. By sticking to your old routines in the new place, a pet can become acclimated more quickly.
  3. Keep pets out of the way. Try to have a family member or friend to watch your pet during the actual move. If not, place them in a room out of the way along with food, water, toys and (if applicable) a litter box. Be sure to check on them frequently to offer a treat.
  4. Introduce them to their new surroundings slowly. Let your pet get to know his new space gently. Use a leash initially when entering your new home and let your pet get used to each new room and space, one at a time.
  5. Be aware of special needs. Small animals, birds, fish and reptiles are more sensitive to environmental changes and require extra-special care during a move. Try introducing them to new water gradually and checking the pH content to maintain a similar environment. Beware of temperature changes for cold-blooded animals as well.
  6. Show them some extra love. By showing your pets continued affection, they will remain more calm throughout the moving process. This helps combat their stress — and yours!

By using these six tips, you can help make the move for you and your pets stress-free.
